Newcastle Work Hostel

The Newcastle Branch founded by Joe Fisher created a first for polio disabled people. Through the efforts and endeavours of its polio disabled members  and  thanks to the Newcastle University Rag making a major contribution, they were able to purchase premises in Lindisfarne Road.

A means of living, working and independence for polio disabled was created. The premises were modified to provide accessible living accommodation for wheelchair users. It was independently organised, managed and run by the disabled members themselves.

With the workshop that was added, they produced cards, calenders and posters that were sold and distributed through the workshops own office facility that generated income, to pay wages and cover running costs.  The project provided training and employment for polio disabled members that gave them opportunity and skills to be able to go on to further employment.
