Joe contracted polio in 1945 whilst serving in India. He is the Founding member of the Newcastle Branch and brought about the first scheme in Britain for independent living accommodation and work which was managed by and for polio disabled people 56:01
002_Sue O'Brien_JPG Sue O'Brien Sue contracted polio in 1952. Her story is also about her brother Peter who also had polio and was placed in an iron lung. Their mother, Val, kept a daily diary at that time.  The family never fully recovered from what happened all those years ago. 29:48

Betty Contracted polio in 1953. One of her endearing memories is being a chaperone for teenagers at swimming gala's at Stoke Mandeville – not an easy task!.
